You may also wish to bring an International Driving Permit when traveling outside the EU.

Rules and regulations abroad

Tolls, environmental zones, and road stickers in Europe

When driving abroad, you will often have to pay to use highways, tunnels, or bridges. In some places, you need to purchase a physical vignette in advance, while other countries require digital payment.

Many cities have also introduced environmental zones where you may only drive if your vehicle meets specific requirements. In these cases, you may need to register your vehicle or purchase a special environmental sticker.

We recommend checking these requirements before your trip. Using the FDM link below, you can find a complete country-by-country overview of regulations so you can prepare for your road trip as effectively as possible.

Examples of toll payment apps when driving abroad

Several European countries have made it easier to pay toll charges by offering digital solutions. With smartphone apps, you can easily manage payments for highway tolls, environmental zones, and other road-related fees. If you do not pay yourself or use one of the apps listed below, the charge will be sent to us, after which we will invoice your employer. This may result in additional administration fees.

Below is a recommended list of apps that you may benefit from downloading and using for toll payments when driving abroad:

Checklist before you leave:

Give your vehicle a quick check:

  • Inspect your tires and check tire pressure
  • Make sure all vehicle lights are working
  • Check and refill windshield washer fluid to ensure good visibility

Before leaving on vacation, we recommend checking the date and mileage for your next service appointment.

If your vehicle is due for service during your trip abroad, or if you will not be able to meet the service requirement after returning from vacation, we recommend having the service completed before departure.

Especially if you drive an electric vehicle:

  • Make sure you have access to multiple charging options through different apps
  • Check where the emergency release for the charging cable is located (this may be needed if the charging connector becomes stuck after charging)

When packing the vehicle, think about safety:

  • Place heavy luggage at the bottom and as far forward in the trunk as possible
  • Ensure a clear view from the driver's seat
  • Bring a spare vehicle key
